Matthew Wade is an Australian professional cricketer who has represented his country in all 3 formats of the sport (Tests, ODIs, T20Is), as a wicket-keeper batsman. Before breaking into the senior national team in 2011, he had represented Australia at the 2006 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, helping the team reach the semi-final. He has played for and captained both his home state of Tasmania (2006-07, 2016-17–Present) as well as Victoria (2007-08–2016-17) in Australian domestic cricket. He had captained the latter team to 2 of their 3 successive Sheffield Shield titles between 2015 and 2017. In the English summer of 2016, when he was out of the Australian national team for a while, he had played for Warwickshire County Cricket Club in the English domestic circuit.

  • As a youngster, Matthew had represented his home state of Tasmania in both junior cricket and junior football (Australian rules). He was good enough to have vice-captained the Tassie Mariners in the TAC Cup (know known as NAB League Boys), an under-19 Australian rules football representative competition.
  • When he was just 16 years old, he had been diagnosed with testicular cancer. He had to undergo 2 rounds of chemotherapy to defeat the disease which had fortunately been diagnosed at a very early stage.
  • He is color blind and has often faced difficulties, throughout his playing career, to tackle cricket balls of different colors and their myriad movements (seam, swing, spin, and turn).
  • A dynamic T20 batsman who transitioned from the middle order to the top order in the latter half of his career, he has represented Melbourne Stars (2011-12–2013-14), Melbourne Renegades (2014-15–2015-16), and Hobart Hurricanes (2017-18–Present) in the BBL (Big Bash League). He had also had a brief stint with Delhi Daredevils (2011) in the IPL (Indian Premier League).
  • In December 2020, he was given the honor to captain a senior national Australian squad for the first time in his career, after regular captain Aaron Finch had been ruled out due to an injury.
