MARLOW doesn't disappoint with the awesome hopeful emotional single and music video titled "Over"

Publish date: 2024-06-14

With an awesome music video, MARLOW definitely wants to make an impact with the release of their new single “Over”, and that’s exactly what they’ve done. The track is set to send chills running through your body upon first listen, and will stay with you for the rest of the day. This is the follow-up to their single “I’m Not Leaving”, both songs of which are taken from the forthcoming sophomore EP, titled “Home”.

MARLOW is a music project that is headed by Freddie Marlow who is an Eastbourne singer, songwriter, and model. Although he fronts the project as a whole, MARLOW is still a collaborative project which also sees various musicians work alongside Freddie Marlow to create these awesome releases; these band members include Angus Macnaughton (Guitar), Seb Marlow (Bass), Archie Green (Synth), and Liam Avery (Drums). Their indie-pop music really allows all five of them to shine, bringing dynamic versatility into the pop music world with Freddie Marlow sending heartfelt emotion in every track. They have gone on to perform at The Isle of Wight Festival and are set to return to the festival this year, performing on the River Stage as well as performing at their headline show at The Old Blue Last in London. They’ve had tens of thousands of Spotify streams for their tracks, with “Foreign Land” being their most-streamed track on the platform. This rising indie-pop project is making an unforgettable impact on listeners all over the world, and we cannot wait to see what the future brings them.

Talking about the track, Freddie Marlow said: “It’s a plea to another to hold on. This song was inspired by real events in my relationship/relationships. There are times when communication breaks down and I feel like at any moment the other person may fall through my hands. In the verses, I’ve tried to paint the picture of myself looking at someone and searching for all the things I would like to say, but as I try to say them I feel as if my hands are tied. It’s not a depressing song, it’s uplifting and the pounding drums and shiny synths reflect the fight. The simplistic lyrics will allow the listener to think, reflect and feel.”

A stripped-back pop-synth song like no other, MARLOW brings it for this highly-personal and honest track that is sure to make every listener reflect in one way or another. Bringing a Coldplay-feel mixed with Ed Sheeran, Keane, and a bit of Snow Patrol, “Over” hits the heart whilst the addictive chorus is determined to get stuck inside your head even though it’s a ballad track. Lyrically, the song has this hopeful edge to it, bringing a bit of positivity in what is usually likely a sad and difficult time for someone. MARLOW just brings this indie-pop emotional edge that truly puts a spotlight on them. “Over” is the one track that is going to hit different at a MARLOW gig!

As for the music video, directed by William Pope whilst the cinematography was handled by Simon Van Parijs, we watch an entire narrative in reverse, effortlessly reimagining the track’s incredible lyrics, with a twist at the end that viewers may not expect. The video is reminiscent of NF’s “Time” as both are shown in reverse and the opening scene sees a woman leaving a man after an argument, although “Over” in fact starts with a headshot of the male with a tear running down his face. We watch on as Oliver Tennant and Shadee Yaghoubi act out the incredible scenes embodying the characters and truly making sure the viewers can feel the emotion – and we sure did! There are plenty of incredible slow-motion scenes, such as watching the beads of the bracelet fall back up the stairs and around her arm, the bouncing of Oliver on the bed when he jumps onto it, and Shadee throwing clothes and shoes at him (although we watch them return to her hands as we’re watching in reverse).

As the viewers, we wonder what the argument is about, seeing something that Shadee found in the bin and our minds go to him possibly cheating on her, and maybe that’s what she thought, but it turns out that he wiped makeup off his face, and threw some Nyx Cosmetics away after using them. The ending scene sees him wearing makeup and feeling more like themselves. As Ariana Grande said, makeup doesn’t have a gender, and this ending scene is so powerful as Oliver Tennant has embodied the character perfectly – whether he is just trying out makeup, whether he’s a closeted non-binary or trans – it’s clear that the reflection is showing this character being their true selves and that is what stays with the viewer and makes the perfect impact. A brilliant music video, with the entire team knocking it out of the park, and Oliver Tennant and Shadee Yaghoubi should be beyond proud of their flawless acting performances in this visual.
