Lockwood missed the rest of the regular season with a right shoulder injury. It is known that he suffered a sprain in his shoulder. The injury occurred when he landed on his right elbow with his arm away from his body after he was tossed from his first-round bull in Lincoln, Nebraska in 2020.

Jess didn’t compete in Lincoln the following day and wasn’t entered in Tulsa. On one occasion, he accidentally released the rope at the end of his ride. Afterward, he crashed into the arena floor head first and had a potential neck-breaking landing.

As a result, Lockwood was diagnosed with a cervical sprain. He also had a groin injury which caused him to limp from the arena after riding Power Puff for 70 points. Therefore, he was unable to compete in the remainder of the event until the PBR World Finals in  2018.
