This started after he rose to stardom for his breakthrough movie American Beauty and it wasn’t long before he became so addicted.

Though married to Jennifer at the time, he managed to hide his addiction from her, and as their trouble continued, he later moved to an apartment where he could do drugs without being disturbed. Unfortunately, his addiction problems started interfering with his job and even led to his arrest and order into a 12-step program.

Nonetheless, he relapsed and continued drugs until he got broke. This period also coincided with the loss of his best friend Heath Ledger who died as a result of a drug overdose in January 2008. He would later try to stay clean after Robert Downey Jr shared his story of overcoming addiction.
