The Big Bang Theory

CBS announced Wednesday that it was renewing The Big Bang Theory, for not one, not two, but three more seasons.

Big Bang Theory is TV’s highest-rated, most-watched comedy, ensuring that the show would get an eighth season. But the  network announced that they had at least three more seasons worth of laughs for the gang as they eat take-out on the couch, go to Cheesecake Factory or work, and explore the hilarity of bromances, gal pals, and romantic entanglements. Fans are thrilled to hear that they will be watching the show that has made us intimate friends with Sheldon, Leonard, Penny, Raj, Howard, Amy, and Bernadette for at least 10 seasons, through the 2016-2017 season.

Nina Tassler, chairman of CBS Entertainment, said, “Comedy is a big part of our schedule, and The Big Bang Theory is the biggest comedy force on television. This multi-year deal further strengthens our network’s position for future seasons and marks another chapter in the great partnership CBS enjoys with Warner Bros. Television for delivering audiences the best in comedy. We’re proud to work with and showcase the incredible talents of Chuck Lorre, Steve Molaro, and this amazing cast every week.”

Season 7 is currently on air, with each Thursday night episode averaging 19.8 million weekly viewers and a 6.1 demo rating, with Live+7 DVR playback factored in. Season 8 likely will kick off (temporarily) on a new night, due to CBS’ new Thursday Night Football commitment.

The show has made stars of all its actors. It gave Jim Parsons his first big break as Sheldon, the regimented, social inept, and deeply eccentric genius, resulting in three Emmys, one Golden Globes, and countless other awards and nominations. Johnnie Galecki and Kaley Cuoco are household names thanks to the show, and Mayim Bialik has had a career resurgence after joining the show as Sheldon’s hilarious and patient love interest Amy Farrah Fowler.  Galecki was nominated for one Emmy and one Golden Glove for his role as Leonard and Bialik has been nominated for two Emmys for her depiction of the flat affected, eager Amy.
