Marie is in the best shape of her life after losing 20 lbs in three months, and loves to run marathons. "The benefits of training for a long distance running event such as a half marathon or marathon are many," says Timothy Miller, MD. "By far the most notable benefits are improvements in cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. Other less commonly publicized positive effects are weight loss and mental health changes such as improvement in mood, self-esteem, reductions of anxiety and relationship bonding with training partners. Additionally, an active lifestyle that includes marathon training often stimulates healthier eating habits and quitting smoking."
Marie enjoys adding cauliflower to dishes such as vegan cauliflower burritos. "Like broccoli and cabbage, cauliflower's sulforaphane content has a number of health benefits including reducing the risk of cancer," says registered nutritionist Kerry Torrens. "Sulforaphane fights cancer in a number of ways including protecting cells from DNA damage as well as inactivating carcinogens. Being rich in sulfur, cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower may support gut health and as a result improve your defense against infection. This is because sulfur supports the production of glutathione which is important for maintaining the integrity of the gut lining as well as supporting its regeneration. As a potent antioxidant, glutathione works throughout the body protecting cells from inflammatory damage."
San Diego-based Marie is a huge fan of ocean sports, especially paddle boarding. "Exercising in natural environments has been shown to have greater benefits for mental health than exercising elsewhere," says Sergio Diez Alvarez, Director Of Medicine, The Maitland and Kurri Kurri Hospital, University of Newcastle. "This is because it combines the benefits of exercise with the restorative effects of being in nature. Swimming in the ocean is no less the case. It can be relaxing, meditative and reduce stress. In his 2014 book Blue Mind, marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols brought together evidence for why people find themselves in a meditative and relaxed state when they are in, on or under water."
Marie loves taking sexy dance classes as usually she is quite introverted. "What I love about this dance class I take!!! 1 😃 it's a small business that has truly blossomed," she captioned a video. "I absolutely love and support small businesses. 2 It's truly a space where women encourage one another. It's low lights, and self confidence. I let loose with myself. I've never felt uplifted with myself the way I do here. I'm one of the biggest introverts you could ever meet. I'm no professional by any means, but by the end of my class I feel so confident about myself even if it doesn't meet anyone else's standards. It's the funnest cardio I have ever done and boy do my abs and knees hurt the next day."
Marie enjoys dabbling in art, even taking a "date night" painting class with Brown. Experts say creating art offers incredible health benefits. "Creativity in and of itself is important for remaining healthy, remaining connected to yourself and connected to the world," says Christianne Strang, a professor of neuroscience at the University of Alabama Birmingham and the former president of the American Art Therapy Association.
